Last night, SB OverSeas and youth from the Red Cross Belgium attended an Iftar dinner hosted by the American Embassy in Belgium. The event took place in Allee du Kaai, a former warehouse now turned into a community space by Toestand, who aim to rejuvenate abandoned buildings to make them for the community.
It was in this location that we had the Iftar event. The night started out with workshops. The youth from SB Espoir had the opportunity to meet hip hop artists from Brussels. We learned the art of beatboxing and writing lyrics. Following this the youth had the opportunity to perform their rap.
After a speech from the organisers, dinner was served. Conversation flowed in between courses of soup, couscous and moroccan sweets. We ended the night full from all the delicious food.
Many thanks to the American Embassy in Brussels for the invitation and to Souterrain Production and La Belle Hip Hop for their workshops.
SB OverSeas works with unaccompanied minors living in asylum centres in Brussels through our program SB Espoir. SB Espoir is an integration program run on the weekends supported by our volunteers. Through the activities such as workshops (photography, chocolate-making and painting) and excursions to urban farms, rock-climbing and ice-skating , the youth are provided an insight into life in Belgium and given an opportunity to experience new things.
