My name is Cecilia and I am from Portugal. <\/span><\/span>I moved to Brussels two years ago and I am currently working for a philanthropic organisation<\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

How did you get involved with SB<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

I joined SB OverSeas in October 2016. <\/span><\/span>Back then I was a trainee at the European Commission and I was responsible for the coordination of a group of volunteers involved in different activities<\/span><\/span><\/span>. <\/span><\/span>Whilst searching for volunteering opportunities in Brussels, I came across SB OverSeas\u2019 work with asylum seekers and refugees<\/span><\/span><\/span>. Since then, I have been volunteering with the organisation at the Red Cross Center.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Favourite memory with SB?<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

All the activities I have participated in were meaningful and remarkable. I would <\/span><\/span>however<\/span><\/span><\/span> like to highlight the \u2018Home Away from Home\u2019 workshop. <\/span><\/span>Throughout the four week workshop, the youth had the opportunity to express the meaning of home by drawing and painting the walls of the centre<\/span><\/span><\/span>. <\/span><\/span>The result was <\/span><\/span><\/span>utterly<\/span><\/span><\/span> touching and moving and made me realise, once more, the universality of concepts such as home, family and love<\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

What do you find challenging?<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

I don\u2019t think I have ever faced any particular challenge with the youth, at least not anymore nor different from the challenges when dealing with other young boys<\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Advice for a future volunteer?<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

I would say volunteering is not a hobby. It is not about filling in the space of free time. It is <\/span><\/span>surely<\/span><\/span><\/span> not about getting experience to <\/span><\/span>be added<\/span><\/span><\/span> to your CV. <\/span><\/span>I think<\/span><\/span><\/span> it is an act of love and humanity and <\/span><\/span>ultimately<\/span><\/span><\/span> it is about accountability.
