\n\u2013 Steve Jobs<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\nAs in\nmartial arts, focus and discipline are also two of the main elements when it\ncomes to the activity of coding. On our everyday basis, we use a variety of\nprograms which enables us to have an easier life. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Unfortunately,\nthis is not the case all over the world- many children and young people are\nstill lacking the knowledge about technology and its usage. Thus, with\nthe help of CoderDojo, we decided to bring this opportunity to the youth we\nwork with in the centers, in order to open the horizon of the youth to be\ncreative with coding technology in a safe & social environment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Red\nCross Centre in Uccle was the first one in which our initiative was put into\npractice. During this activity, the youth learnt how to code with computers and\nbecame knowledgeable about some IT skills with the asbl CoderDojo and its\nvolunteers from BeCode. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The youth\nused coding language in order to create games. In the first part of the\nsession, they coded using only the computers, whereas in the second part of the\nsession they attached to their computers the micro bits. The youth was\nextremely surprised when they saw the small pieces of hardware as they never\nencountered something like that before. Therefore, the volunteers from BeCode\ncalmly explained what it is- the Micro Bit is\nan open source hardware ARM-based embedded system designed by the BBC for use\nin computer education in the UK.<\/em>\nAfterwards, the youth were extremely engaged in coding while using the new\nmachine. <\/p>\n\n\n\nThis\nexperience taught them new skills and engaged them in a different type of\nactivity which could benefit them in the long term. Besides this, another\npositive aspect of this activity was that it contributed to the integration of\nthe newly arrived youth in Belgium as they never heard of such practices. This\nwas a very important aspect for the SB Espoir team as we always look forward to\nengaging the youth in educational activities which can open their perspective\nwith regards to their career prospects. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Our\npartner, CoderDojo started in the US with the simple question of one child\ntowards a hacker: \u2018how did you manage to get access to that information?\u2019. <\/em>Afterwards,\nstep by step this question started to have the answer in the CoderDojo courses.\nInitially these were accessible just in the US, but over the years they\nexpanded themselves in many other corners of the world such as\nBelgium. <\/p>\n\n\n\nAt the end\nof the day, the youth present in the activity told us they were happy to join\nDojo Coding and as a result they wanted to follow the classes in the following\nweekends at the coding center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Technology\nis rapidly changing the world we live in. Every day, new innovations are developed\nthat further integrate technology into our everyday lives. We don\u2019t know what\nthe world will look like in 10 years, but we do know that the world\nwill be powered by the IT industry. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Therefore, providing the chance to each, and every child young person to have access and knowledge to and of the power of coding is essential. Together with CoderDojo we achieved our goal!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
