ABOUT THE PROGRAMME
SB OverSeas is looking for enthusiastic & capable volunteers to help support our non-formal schools and women’s training centres in Lebanon: in Beirut and Saida (45 minutes south of Beirut). As a volunteer you will be mainly in charge of teaching two or more classes of English, Maths or Science per day. You will also have the chance to get involved in other activities, such as:
- Sports activities
- Music, arts & theatre activities
- Communications and Social Media
- … and more!
Our schools prepare the refugee children for the entry tests into the Lebanese public education system. Without access to public education, they risk missing out on an education permanently, and becoming a “lost generation”. We also run life-skills classes, which give our children and youth the tools needed to pursue their dreams and aspirations.
The women in our centres, meanwhile, find themselves in vulnerable situations, and have asked our team to provide them with English lessons in order to give them a new practical skill, and to empower them with the confidence that comes with learning a second language. We also organise knitting, crochet and painting classes for the women, which provide them with marketable skills which they can use to support themselves and their families.
We are looking for volunteers to join us for placements of a minimum of 2 months or more. The Lebanon Volunteering Programme has been running from October 2016 and will continue throughout 2019.
There are two options for volunteers:
- Branch A: full-time volunteering (contribution of $500 for two months).
- Branch B: volunteering and Arabic language course (contribution of $850 for two months).
We provide for between 40% to 60%* per volunteer each month to cover administrative costs and to support you with the cost of accommodation in Lebanon (rent, electricity, heating or air conditioning and internet), as well as providing a food allowance each week of $100 per apartment. Although we provide this contribution, we do ask volunteers to contribute to the other part of the monthly costs relating to accommodation.
*Our contribution to accommodation costs per volunteer fluctuates through the year as the costs of heating, electricity and air conditioning can vary depending on the extent to which the services are used, depending on the season of the year.
